Video#20: Setting Sun, Rising Dreams
California, USA.
November, 2008
The Sun peeks through curd-like clouds. Also, a hint of blue sky is seen above the multi-layer
clouds. Around 20 surfers are in the water during the opening wide shot. In silhouette, a lone stand
-up paddle boarder guides his board through shimmering sunlit water. The view dissolves into a closer
shot with two surfers bobbing on the incoming swells. The sunlight hits the water, making it look like
liquid mercury. The golden sunbeams reflect off the water in an appealing, sparkling way. A surfer
bobs on the water while his shortboard is half-submerged, seemingly contemplating the sunshine on the
ocean water. Next shot, we see a male surfer riding his longboard to the right. The wave almost
knocks him over as it crests, but he manages to keep his balance and keeps surfing. Another surfer
rides a longboard rightward. He gracefully walks the board, moving back and forth along the stringer.
A different longboarder heads right, while a shortboarder follows him close behind. But the wave
crests, and both riders jump off their boards, and start paddling out to the lineup again. Finally,
there is a wide shot showing a whole bunch of seaweed floating far beyond the many surfers. A
shortboarder expertly alternates between bottom turns and top turns. He pumps his board to gain speed.
The video fades out.
