Video#30: Mount Lutsen Skiing Minnesota, USA. 2011 This video was photographed in December of 2011 in the state of Minnesota, U.S.A. The skier holds a handicam and videotapes his descent down the snowy hill. The video starts with a downward look at the Volkl skis at the top of the hill underneath the skier's feet. The groomed snow is visible. The loud sounds of downhill skis squeaking on the snow are heard - like the sounds of crunching styrofoam. Then the camera tilts upward as the skier begins to gain speed and heads down the hill.
On the horizon, we see blue waters of Lake Superior, with sunlight glinting off its surface. A distant cloudbank hovers above the lake. Gray smoke is coming out of chimneys from many cottages. The treelined ski hill at Mount Lutsen called the Ullr Run is a 'green' run for beginner skiers. It's a sunny day, and the sun causes many multicolored lens flares. The skier continues down the ski run making many S-turns to check his speed. As he accelerates, the wind starts to cause muffled sounds in the handicam's microphone. Midway through the ski run, the path diverges, and the skier takes the rightmost path. For a few seconds, he turns the video camera downward to look at the shadow of himself on the ground. Then the camera points at the horizon again. A slower beginner skier is in front of our skiing cameraman, doing the 'snow-plow' technique. The video fades out with a brief look at the orange boundary netting fence, and a final look at the cold blue waters of one of the Great Lakes. |
