Video#15: The Physics of "Flying Like a Bird"
March, 2012

On March 19th, 2012, a YouTube video went viral. The video purported to show a man using sensors to control the flapping wings of an aircraft by flapping his arms like a bird flaps its wings. The effect was to create the first human-controlled flapping aircraft. At first, many people thought the video was a fake because the flight video appeared to have been partly computer generated. But few bloggers commented on the physics of why the flight didn't work. This video (video#15 on this web page) shows some reasons, using known physical science, for why the flight was not likely to have been real. For the record, the 'human flight' video creator admitted that the video was a hoax a few days after his video had gone viral.
