Video#23: Turtle Bay Resort at Night
Oahu, Hawaii, USA.
December, 2008

The night is very windy at the coastal Turtle Bay Resort on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. A palm tree, lit by a ground-level floodlight, is swaying in the gale. The tree fronds vibrate mightily in the wind, lit by a floodlight from below. Next, the resort's vacant outdoor swimming pool water is moving as the wind gently ripples its surface. Its beautiful aquamarine hue is lit by underwater lighting. Despite the strong wind, the humid tropical air is warm. There is a very light drizzle, and the pool area looks comparatively calm. Next, in stark contrast, is a night view looking out to the ocean over a 'lava tube.' Hawaiian lava tubes were made by natural geological activity thousands of years ago when the island of Oahu was first created by volcanoes. Today, the lava tubes are no longer filled with lava, but are empty, which allows incoming wave water to shoot through the tube — like water through a fire hose. As a big wave caroms past Kuilima Point, some of the forceful shoreline water squirts up through the lava tube to give a deep thumping sound, ending with a giant water spray up in the air. Behind the lava tube is a view of storm swells hurtling toward Turtle Bay. At night, the water is black, and barely visible, but for the faint hotel lights that illuminate the white foam caps on the roiling waves. Were it not for the hotel lights, the injurious ocean swells would be eerily invisible, their presence betrayed only by the violent sounds of the crashing surf. The video ends with a nighttime view of a man-made water fountain near the swimming pool. Liquid cascades from above, pouring over two shelves, simulating a gentle waterfall over natural volcanic rock. The soothing waterfall is lit by a soft floodlight in this relaxing scene that contrasts the man-made calm of a luxury resort swimming pool with the violent natural ocean that's mere meters away. The video fades out.
