Video#24: Oahu Surfing & Views
Oahu, Hawaii, USA.
December, 2008

This video was shot over a few days around Christmas in 2008 on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The video begins with a postcard-worthy view of a golden sandy beach with brilliant azure skies above. There are just a few fluffy white clouds. The scene is framed on both sides by lush green foliage. A shirtless bearded man, clad only in blue boardshorts and a fisherman's hat, walks by with a shortboard surfboard tucked under his right arm. He eagerly scans the ocean as he heads toward the water for his daily surfing session. Behind him, on the beach, are bright orange lifeguard warning flags fluttering in the breeze. Kaena Point, the westernmost point of the island of Oahu is seen far beyond. The next shot shows a cloudier day. A lone leafy green plant keeps watch over a surf break that's far away from shore. The remote moving black specks in the water are surfers jockying for position to catch the best incoming wave. In the foreground, the incoming tide sloshes over dangerous submerged rocks very close to shore. The next image shows a different surf break, but this one is much nearer to shore. The nearshore water looks deceptively calm to the casual observer. But surfers need to be cautious, and dismount from their boards early, lest they be pounded by the breaking waves that slam into the steeply dropping shore underneath the water. A shirtless man in dark boardshorts shows how. He rides his shortboard, weaving up and down the waveface. The man jumps off his board, and swims back out to sea to catch another wave.

From the close-up view we go to another wide shot of a surf break that's a good distance from shore. More moving black specks are the surfers who are trying to catch some breaking waves on the textured water. In the foreground, tiny wavelets slosh above some near-shore rocks in quick succession. They make a pleasant hollow 'foamy' sound as they collide with the thick sand and each other. We return to a near-shore beach break where a grinning muscular Polynesian man in plaid boardshorts walks by with a blue 'soft top' surfboard held above his head. A jetski playfully skips over the water in the distance. Near-shore, a different shirtless male surfer with 'hawaiian flag' boardshorts surfs his shortboard over the gentle wave face. He ends his ride just before the incoming wave turns into agitated whitewater. The video ends just as it began, with another postcard-like view. But this time, Kaena Point is nearer. Still, its huge size and remoteness means it is slightly obscured behind the veil of the atmosphere. The orange-yellow sun tries to peak through the lower clouds. From this angle, the yellow sunlight doesn't gleam off the water so much as it reflects off the moist sand near the high-water line. Large boulders and a family of palm trees frame the left side. In the foreground, a beach blanket lies alone on the hot beach sand. A few bathers wade near the shore, relaxing in the warm Hawaiian water. The video fades out.
