Around 3:20 pm local time, professional surfer and 3-time World Champion Mick Fanning, 34, was participating in the final heat of the World Surfing League J-Bay Open surfing contest versus Julian Wilson. Minutes into the heat, splashes could be seen right next to Fanning, and he was in an agitated state, waving to a nearby safety boat.
A video replay on the World Surfing League website showed a large shark dorsal fin coming out of the water. Seconds later, it appeared that another fin slapped Fanning in the face. Fanning immediately swam a few meters toward shore until a nearby safety boat brought him to safety. His surfboard legrope (leash) had been severed in two by the shark. The surfboard was undamaged, Fanning had no injuries, and was even calm enough to give a quick interview. Rival surfer Julian Wilson also escaped harm, and was rescued by a nearby official contest jetski. The surf contest was suspended for the day.
The contest's safety boat was equipped with sonar equipment and observers had also been visually patrolling the nearby waters for any shark activity, but the attacking shark escaped detection. The presence of the nearby safety boat may have spared Fanning from a lethal attack.
